February 2026 Board Update
Welcome to the February update from the Hornby Island Co-op Board of Directors.
New Building
Thank you to those who attended the information session on the new building on January 25th. For those who were unable to attend, there were presentations from the Leckie Studios (Architects and Design Team), AFD Construction and Cascadian Wood Tech who were the successful bidders on the tender for the timber contract. Cascadian is a local company based out of Union Bay who showed a video of the construction of their own facility and gave us an idea of how some similar techniques will be used to construct the new Co-op. Each presentation demonstrated the thought, care and commitment of each of our contractors to build a Co-op store that respects the needs of the community today and sets us up to support the community for many future generations.
For more information on some of the questions asked please see the special communication that was put out by the Board in early February located here or on the Hornby Island website under Board Updates.
Land Blessing
Prior to breaking ground, the Board held a land blessing conducted by David Dawson of the Komoks First Nation. The small ceremony gave thanks and great respect to the
existing building and the many gifts it has brought to all of us over the years. As we make way for the new building the site was blessed with song and stories of new
beginnings. Thank you David for such moving and special ceremony. GM Update The Recruitment Committee, in conjunction with assistance from FCL, is conducting
second round interviews where candidates have been brought to Hornby to meet the Board in person. This will continue through the end of February as we work through
everyone’s schedules.
Porch Sessions
The Board continues to be available on the porch of the Co-op every second Saturday with to answer questions and engage with our membership. Please drop by and say hello!
